There are 177 nonprofit organizations in Los Alamos and White Rock today, but our nonprofit legacy began long ago!
During WWII Los Alamos was a remote Secret City operated by the military. If you wanted entertainment or a service, you had to provide it yourself! The first official organized social club in Los Alamos was the Little Theater Group formed in 1943. It was quickly followed by the Los Alamos Big Band/Keynotes (1944), Los Alamos Garden Club (1947), Kiwanis (1948), and others. Many of these nonprofit organizations (sometimes with new names) are still active in Los Alamos today.
The desire to make our community a better place by working together is alive and well today. According to GuideStar, there are 177 nonprofit organizations located in Los Alamos. These organizations enrich our community by providing food, assistance, nursing care, music, dance, meals, financial assistance, information, and community connections. Each organization requires volunteers and funding, so many people in our community are engaged with one or more nonprofit organization. Ask your neighbors how they give back to the community, and join us in keeping our legacy of nonprofit giving alive! #LosAlamosGives
